Business Goals

Breaking into Tech can be very challenging for those without experience today. Tech Fleet Community DAO offers those people a chance to build real-world on-the-job experience and grow their talents within the Tech Fleet Network. Tech Fleet community also takes on agency client work for UX, product management, and development and gives the newbies and the experienced people a chance to work with those clients.

Team

I am Founder of Tech Fleet, and have grown its operations alongside community contributors, co-founders, and an advisors. I also contribute directly on projects as Project Lead and Lead Product Strategist when opportunities and needs arise. I take in new client work and coordinate scope with the project coordinator team. I've coached and contributed in project lead, UX research, UX design, and product strategy roles on Tech Fleet client projects.

Product

Tech Fleet offers community-driven education, coaching, and freelance to those who belong to the Tech Fleet Network. Tech Fleet is building a web platform operating on the blockchain alongside NFT and web3 infrastructure. Tech Fleet community builds all kinds of products from websites to mobile apps to blockchain dApps and everything in between.

Timeline

I've been building and contributing to this for over 2 years since July 2020.

Process

Tech Fleet projects operate with one-week sprints. Tech Fleet as an organization has a decentralized process in how it operates. Smaller groups with full ownership of tasks get together to decide how to proceed with key decisions. I've built processes for how projects and client work operate. When Tech Fleet contributors work on new things, we work within our own backlogs that we re-prioritize as we meet.

When I was in graduate school for UX I started working on an Agile software team. It was eye-opening to say the least. I quickly learned a couple hard truths about the world:

  1. Not everyone understands UX or is bought into the work we do, and that's ok.
  2. The Design Thinking process that I was learning in school isn’t always applicable in the industry exactly as we’re taught.

On the job, I had to bend and break a lot of “rules” I learned in school. I had to unlearn (and re-learn) the UX process I was being taught in school in order to successfully apply it on Agile teams. By the time I had finished grad school I was applying Lean UX and orchestrating Agile UX strategy while orchestrating product delivery. I, like many others, had to work to overcome the missing skills between education and the real world. While school gave me a powerful foundation, I had to fill the gap myself to be ready for the Agile software world on a product team. I started Tech Fleet so that I could help foster the industry skills that are expected of UX’ers on software teams in the world, and give them a 100% genuine taste of product life.

Tech Fleet started as a pro bono agency for UX research, UX design, and product management and now takes on so much more. We’ve taken on more complex and invigorating project work over time. Over the years the community has grown with more members and more clients.

As of the 2 year mark, over 70 people have taken Tech Fleet apprenticeships and went into full-time roles. We've served UX researchers, UX writers, UX designers, product designers, project managers, product managers, product owners, and developers into the world so far.

Tech Fleet apprenticeship model involved pairing up a lead with inexperienced apprentices in a "Buddy" system. We ended up offering a lot of project roles with co-leads to give lead roles the same change to learn alongside peers as apprentices.
